Worst suburbs in Perth to ride your bike?

The Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia (RAC) has blogged on Perth’s worst suburbs for hoon drivers. See here for the blog posting. To me this raises the question: are the same suburbs bad for cyclists? Why not share your thoughts in the comments box below.

The suburbs identified in the posting are Gosnells (No. 1 Hoon suburb), Canning Vale, Armadale, Wanneroo, Ballajura and Joondalup.

I know from my own riding with my regular commute taking me through Mullaloo, Ocean Reef, Connelly and into Joondalup that there is a noticeable degrading in driver behaviour in the section between Hodges Drive and Whitfords Avenue as I ride the coast along Northshore Drive, Oceanside Prom and Ocean Reef Road and then I head towards Joondalup on Hodges Drive. Interestingly once I reach Hodges Drive heading north and Whitfords Avenue heading south I do notice that on most days there is a sense of calmness. It is just the section in between with the roundabouts along Oceanside Prom being the hot spots for me.

So what areas trouble you? Do the hoon suburbs rate on your radar?

I cycle up and down South Street, Canning Vale, every day and don’t really have much problem.

Maybe I’m not cycling in the ‘bad’ parts of Canning Vale but I’m not sure where they’d be anyway.

I live in Gosnells, only just starting riding, but no different from elsewhere I suspect. I think all the hoons in Gosnells have had their cars confiscated :-) been very quiet at nights the recent months.. kinda miss the roar of a v8 and screeching tyres, but then I am a bit of a rev head anyway. PS I am anti tyre burnouts in the suburbs, there is a time and place for this sort of thing. Go find a deserted road in the middle of nowhere, WA is a big state, or do it legally at the drags..
