Post Recall Mavic R-SYS Front Wheel Failure

Aushiker | June 9, 2009 11:03 pm

Back in January 2009 Mavic recalled their R-SYS carbon front wheels. Well it may be possible that Mavic has not resolved the problem if this report by VeloNews is anything to go by. Ben Delaney describes the failure incident in his blog posting at VeloNews:

Coming around a corner, I felt a shimmy through the front of my bike. I straightened up out of the turn to bring the bike under control. A second or two later I catapulted over the handlebars. The rim of my front wheel had completely detached from the hub. I had not hit anything — not another rider, a curb or even a rock. I landed on my head and broke my shoulder. The front wheel was Mavic’s second generation, post-recall carbon-spoke R-Sys wheel.

The full blog posting can be found here. It will be interesting to see if Mavic issue a second recall on these wheels. Is it a warning to stay away from carbon-spoke wheels?

Mavic Recalls R-SYS Front Wheels

Aushiker | January 13, 2009 12:34 pm

Bike News Europe is reporting that Mavic has announced a voluntary recall of its R-SYS front wheels as a precautionary safety measure.  The Australian recall notice has now been posted by Product Recalls Australia.

The French company has identified that the carbon tubular spokes of the R-SYS front wheel may break during use under certain circumstances causing the rider to lose control and possibly fall, potentially sustaining injury.

All models of Mavic R-SYS front wheels are concerned (R-SYS, R-SYS test, R-SYS Premium), whether purchased separately or as part of a bicycle. The wheels must no longer be used.

Consumers should immediately return their front wheel to a Mavic dealer. A new upgraded R-SYS front wheel will be delivered free of charge. This exchange will start from 31 March 2009. Until this date Mavic will offer a set of Aksium wheel so the customer can keep using his bike. This spare wheel doesn’t have to be returned after the consumer has received the replacing R-SYS front wheel.

Bernard Millaud, Mavic Managing Director, said: “Mavic is undertaking this voluntary, precautionary recall program because of our uncompromising commitment to customer safety and satisfaction. Our customers rightly expect our products to be of the very highest quality, and Mavic will continue to meet that expectation.”

Purchase Experience

Anne purchased the bike from TBE Osborne Park and really went with TBE based on my experience with them in purchasing my Look 555 and the excellent service and advice given by Liz.  Liz really put in a lot effort with Anne, patiently going over the options, not being too pushy and really trying to help.  It paid off with Anne spending $800 more on a bike than she intended.

TBE also put some effort into setting the bike up, including moving the shifters to a better position for Anne, swapping seats out and installing some platform pedals for her that I had.  Anne is using the platforms for a bit until she gets a handle on the bike.
