BICYCLE MAINTENANCE: Look 555 “500 km” Winter Service

My Look 555 today received its first winter service for 2009 at 8,864 km / 5,508 mi.  Winter services are scheduled every 500 km (311 mi), but this one was late by 364 km (227 mi) (my bad).  The service consisted of:

  1. Degreasing the chain using a Park’s Tool CM-5 Cyclone Chain Scrubber and Australian Export degreaser;
  2. Application of Rock and Roll Gold chain lube to the chain;
  3. Checking of chain wear with a Park Tools CC-3 Chain Wear indicator.  The chain wear indicator is now slipping in easily at 0.75, but will not go in at 1.0, so leaving the chain on for now as per this study and related discussion at the Australian Cycling Forums;
  4. Checking the tension on all bolts and screws on Froggie.  Found the four face plate bolts are showing signs of rust.  Will need to replace these with stainless steel bolts.
  5. Cleaning the bike.  I ensured that I covered the Garmin Edge GCS-10 sensor this time with a plastic bag to avoid it getting wet. It seems to have done the trick.

No other issues where noted. Tyre wear is okay, brake pad wear is okay and the derailleur’s and brakes are holding their adjustments okay.
