The Western Australian Government department, the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has developed an informative website listing all DEC campgrounds in Western Australia.
Walking
The world of exploring our environment by shanks-pony (our feet). Also known as bushwalking, hiking, tramping and rambling, depending on where you live. Covers day walks and pack carries and topics that relate to bushwalking but don’t fit into the sub-categories.
1 Millionth Step – Global Corporate Challenge
At work a number of us are participating in the Global Corporate Challenge which personally I find pretty motivating and has helped me get back on the path to weight loss and healthy eating and an overall healthy lifestyle. So it was pleasing this morning to receive this certificate commemorating my first million steps in the program. Of course they are not all actual steps as I am allowed to count my riding as well, but with the riding one has to do four kilometres to record one kilometre of steps or 1,563 steps so it is not all that easy. I started the program on May 20, Week 21 of the year and we are now at the end of Week 25 so it has taken me four weeks to achieve this milestone. During this time I have lost 3.50 kg, so happy with this start.
Railway Reserves Heritage Trail
The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail has been spruced up with its own website. Located, the trail that is not the website, within the Perth Hills the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail retraces 59 kilometres of the old Eastern Railway that formerly linked Fremantle to York in the late 1880s.
This walking, cycling and horse riding rail trail starts at Bellevue forming a unique 41 kilometre loop at Mount Helena entirely on railway formations, before extending to Wooroloo Reserve.
There is a brochure on the trail available for download here. It provides a background on the trail and a map of same.
I have ridden the rail as a bit of a easy day ride. I rode it on a mountain bike but it could be easily ridden on a cyclo-cross or reasonably equipped touring bike or a hybrid. It is a fairly easy ride with lots of places to stop and visit. Just don’t forget your lights if you want to ride the tunnel!
Bibbulmun Track: Harvey-Quindanning Rd to Trees Rd Closed
On June 2, 2010 the Department of Environment and Conservation has advised that Harvey-Quindanning Rd to Trees Rd is closed. A 6.5 km diversion is in place following Chalk Rd and Opossum Rd back to the Track. The Possum Spring Campsite is not affected by the closure.
The map below shows what is believed to be the diversion (red line)
Life on the Road in 2010 – Week 21
The purpose of this series of posting is to summarise my week on the bike and exercising in general. My week runs from Thursday to Friday, so Week 21 for 2010 is from May 21, 2010 through to May 27, 2010.
Walking distance is based on the use of a Global Corporate Challenge pedometer and their calculation that 1,563 steps equals 1 km. The Challenge officially started on May 20, 2010.

Another short week on the bike as I had disruptions to my riding over the weekend. Weekly average is 286 km a week. Would like to get back up to 400 km a week by year end. On the weight front, I started the year in a less than healthy position at 103 kg. My weight at the end of the week is 99.8 kg. My target for the month end is 98 kg. On BikeJournal.com I have dropped out of the Top 100 so now need to work on getting back there! 267 km off the pace. Hopefully over the next two months I will get that back. In respect to the Australian Cycling Forums Club at BikeJournal.com I now dropped out of the Top 10. Damn! |

Fremantle to Joondalup via the coast on the Look 555. I was a little concerned about this mornings ride given I completed the HBF Run for a Reason yesterday but thankfully one uses different muscles when walking/running than cycling or so it seems (well I could ride but hardly walk |
| Tuesday, May 25, 2010 | 40 km on the bike 0 km running 4 km walking |
Joondalup to Fremantle on the Look 555. Pulled out of Joondalup about 15 minutes before dark so the ride was pretty much all in the dark. Wind was WSW at 13 km/h when I left but for the last hour was calm at 0 km/h. A real nice change! Took a slightly different route from normal which provides a safer entry to one of my two bad roundabouts. I think I will stick with this variation now. Mind you it cuts of 4 km from the ride. Traffic was good, bicycles not so good. Two riders without lights and one stupid girl who thought it was funny to run the red light just as I was about to enter the intersection. She wouldn’t have found it funny if I had taken her out … |
| Wednesday, May 26, 2010 | 45 km on the bike 0 km running 4 km walking |
Fremantle to Joondalup via the coast on the Look 555. Slept in and left late (there are some perks with this job |

Joondalup to Churchlands via the Freeway on the Look 555. Semi-dry ride home into SW winds gusting up to 69 km/h. Fun |
